Blackmore Vale Vets Centre – Sturminster Newton

Pre operative information

Please read carefully.

Dogs.
Please ensure that your dog is as clean as possible on the operating day. The surgical site is scrubbed whilst your dog in under anaesthetic, therefore anaesthetic time is greatly reduced if we don’t have to clean off mud and debris. Take your dog for a short walk the morning of the procedure, so that he/she has the chance to go to the toilet. Bring your dog into the surgery on a secure collar and lead.

Cats.
Please keep your cat in overnight with a litter tray to avoid them escaping in the morning.
Bring your cat into the surgery in a secure escape proof carrier.

Dogs & Cats.
Water must be available at all times and you may feed your pet up until 11pm the night before the procedure, unless otherwise specified.

Medication.
If your pet is on medication, consult your vet as to whether your pet needs to have the medication on the morning of the operation.

Flea & worm treatment.
Please ensure that your pet has been treated for fleas and worms recently (within the month), if your pet is found to have either, we will give the appropriate treatment which you then will be charged for.

Pre-anaesthestic blood testing.
This blood test can alert us to conditions not detectable in the pre-anaesthetic physical examination, for example kidney and liver function and diabetes. In younger animals it can give us a baseline for what is ‘normal’ for your pet. The test costs £28.95 including VAT. You will be asked on admittance if you would like your pet to have this test.

What happens next?

On admittance you will be asked to provide contact numbers for the day, so that we can contact you if required. If the operation is not an emergency it may be useful for you to arrange some time off work so that you are around to take care of your pet after the procedure.
After your pet has been admitted we will carry out a full physical heathcheck and possibly a blood test. Your pet will then be settled into a hospital kennel and monitored by the nurses before going into theatre.

We usually ask you to contact us at 2pm so that we can give your pet a chance to recover and decide on when he/she will be ready for discharge. Upon collection you will be given after care advice.

Overnight hospitalisation.

Occasionally, your pet may be required to stay hospitalised overnight. After our premises close at 6.30 pm, a veterinary surgeon and/or a veterinary nurse will check your pet at regular intervals through the night as deemed clinically necessary by the veterinary surgeon. There is both a veterinary surgeon and a veterinary nurse on call at night, but at times other than for scheduled checks the premises will not necessarily be manned.

Payment.

Full payment is expected at the time of collection, unless prior permission has been granted by the principle.
If you have any questions or require an estimate, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01258 472293.
